what made them bad? dunno. currently, the area north of downtown is full of cheap crappy apts with lots of drug related activity and the crime that goes with it.

when you move out of the downtown area more east(east arts district, bluff park, etc), you can go up to 7th or anaheim the closer you get to recreation park, though there are still some neighborhoods to avoid. belmont shore and naples are basically safe as well, but right on the coast.

All of East LB is nice. It ranges from suburbs to coastal.

In the North, Bixby Knolls, Virginia Country Club, etc are nice...and expensive.

Downtown (south of 3rd) is fine, but it is urban so you need to want that.

Finding a 600 room in any of the above will be tough. By the coast it will be 1,000 and up most likely.

East Long Beach is great (look at your private message to you) :-) Finding a room for about 600 shouldn't be hard if you are looking near the traffic circle, the area around Wilson high school (until Redondo Ave.), etc. I think the area where Anaheim St. crosses Pacific Coast Highway and turns into Anaheim Rd. has some pretty reasonable rates. A lot of students live there, but a lot of the Cal State Students tend to be pretty quiet, especially the grad students. I've taught lessons in that neighborhood at all times of the day and never felt over-run by party-types. Craigslist is probably your best bet. A sublet would be good to get going. Good luck!

Get a room at the Seaport Marina hotel. It's a dump, but it is close to the places you'll want to rent and since it's a dump it is cheap. They are supposed to tear it down next year.
