i was just looking on rentclicks.com and they have aprtments on there for 650-800 in riverside county. What are the areas of Apple Valley, Victorville, and Adelanto like? Are they run down areas or high crime areas, the reason they are so cheap?

theresa, if it is a good area, it is generally far from places of business.
Riverside County is quite large as is San Bernardino, in fact San Bernardino County is huge!!
This should help a bit:
Apple Valley's crime rate, including violent crime is almost double the national average.
About 10% of the housing is vacant.

Victorville's cost of living is almost 25% higher than the US average, and it's crime rate is about the same a Apple Valley. There are some decent areas, and some good shopping there, but like any place, if you want the safe neighborhoods, it will cost you.
Adelanto, also has a very high crime rate, in fact it is higher than Apple Valley and Victorville.

I am sorry I do not have better news. Where did you think you might be working? I may be able to help you if you give me a general idea of the area.

I will be working from home for my main job, so that's no problem, but I will want to obtain a job at a hospital, probably, or through an agency. I do not mind living away from shopping and businesses. I have always lived that way to enable living in a decent place.

There are several options if you work at home. There are still affordable areas where there is not industry, hence keeping home values low.

Do you want to live close to your brother?

theresa, first, stay far away from Moreno Valley.
You can find great places to live in Temecula, Wildomar, Yucaipa / Oak Glen, Corona and don't forget where your brother lives Hemet.

Angry California Livin'

We had to move from California and we even owned our own home but after years of living in a 750 sq ft home we wanted a little more room. But when we wanted to move we could sell easily enough but finding anything in our area of California, Santa Cruz, we couldnt' find anything and our taxes would be higher and it just doesn't work as you get older and want to retire or change jobs. If any of you are over 40 you will catch on that you can't move, the older you get the more you feel stuck, you want to move up but then you get smacked iwth higher taxes, or more income tax or something and the cost of living just doesn't get any better in CA. Sure you have higher wages, maybe, if you are in the right industry. I had a detailed conversation with a friend who is a computer engineer. I said, "how can you tell me that anyone can live here and afford it?" "The person who delivers your paper, mows your lawns, and all the other services you enjoy is not making your kind of money" Oh that is there problem he said! These people live 6 to a house. Forever. I have friends that have lived with the same roommates for 20 years now. Might as well adopt each other and make a family!! And ok say the service workers go on to better work after a college degree or something, so who is gonna work the restaurants and deliver your services and goods then dude?! I cannot recall my parents being as stressed as we are in this day and age trying to just own and home and live a normal life! We dont' have kids so we are the lucky ones, my friens with kids, debt till they die!! We are debt free and living in Washington state. No income tax here.I am going back to college to finish a degree and I can actually see a future to move up!
We would love to move back to CA and the nice weather but we weren't lucky enough to have bought in the 1980's before things went nuts. We made a lot of money and after looking at the cost of taxes in CA we decided to do what so many friends did, LEFT. My husband retired from his second career and wanted a little time to enjoy living. He has friends at work just keel over dead from the stress of working so darn much. In fact we have friends who are tired of the 4 hour driving times attatched to their daily job time. My husband worked 12 hour days because of his drive, we could not live close enough to his job to shorten the time. I chose to work from home if I could get the work, and telecommute. We found ourselves just tired of never seeing each other, having little free time to do anything fun anymore, since we bought an old home and it ALWAYS needed something fixed. What is life about anyway? Working till you drop dead or something more balanced? And the crime! oh yeah don't get me started. Good luck to anyone trying to survive in CA.Half the local kids complained their parents worked so much they never say them anymore.
Don't buy into a stupid mortgage, look at how many people are losing their homes now!! I could see it coming 4 years ago when I learned of sub prime loans. California is turning into a two class system, the rich and the rest. And be prepared if they ever vote in the immigrant law, to pay even higher taxes so they can have all the free services because they don't make enough working the fields or mowing the lawns.
Bon Chance!

So although house prices do remain high compared to salary in SoCal, it sounds like a lot more of a shocker to someone who doesn't come from here and doesn't make that kind of money.
Actually $53k for a household is nothing special...in fact it's lower than most big cities. Orlando, Florida has the same household average and it's alot cheaper to live there.

I'm a native Los Angeles/Californian who is considering moving because of cost of living/housing costs. It is outrageous. But I can understand why so many would want to live here. The weather is great! We've got the mountains, dessert (desert), beaches, small towns, large towns, art & entertainment....best (and worst) of everything. Hard to leave that.

53K is very low to live almost anywhere these days!

In fact, we make right around 53K less here in NC than we did in CA. We still make plenty.
