try whittier, montebello. they are at the eastern edge of the SGV if im not mistaken. they might suit your needs a lil more price wise. right now is a good time to find houses on the cheap. esp. 2/1. except those might be of the older variety. 2/1 houses are typical of the 20's 30's and 40's. good luck. alhambra is nice enough and close to san gabriel, but i dont know if it will fit the budget. good luck

With some luck, diligence and time you should be able to find a small 2/1 SFR in the SGV area for around $300,000. You will need a good, agressive realtor and be willing to look through alot of crappy homes to find the one you want. I just did a quick search for current listings under $350,000 in Alhambra and San Gabriel. Only 2 in Alhambra and 7 or 8 in San Gabriel. One looked OK but it's already pending. Others were pretty run down or next to a freeway, etc. Good Luck.
