I have lived here for a couple years, and it seems that many many people I know are leaving, and it seems I can't go into a coffeeshop without overhearing a conversation about who is moving where. I myself have been looking for a decent apartment for 1000 or less and can't find the right place. I have been sleeping in my van for the past couple months, and I am ready to decamp myself. I make decent money, and for what I make in any other city I would be a homeowner right now. Is it just me, or are things getting weird around here?
Ok, weirder than usual......
and also, as an aside, I would recommend for folks looking to move to LA, better have a damn good job (40 g and up) and know where you move before you sign a lease. I have looked at at least 50 places, and the ads are very fond of making Crenshaw Village into Westchester. Gotta be careful!

What do you mean when you say 400 dollar?
Would you pay every week or month?

I wouldn't say its something that about to happen. More like a trend that's been going on for a while. For example, when I sold my house, the appraiser asked where we were headed. When we said we were moving just a couple of miles away, he said something to the effect of "People usually say another state."

The last great exodus out of LA was during the early 90s recession when the Navy left Long Beach and the aerospace industry pretty much left. And so the middle class left parts of the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, Bellflower, Anaheim, parts of the South Bay, etc.

As far as rents in LA, a cheap studio or 1 bedroom can still be found around parts of Venice, Chinatown, Echo Park. Parts of Mid-city. Parts of Hollywood (especially east of the 101).

I think LA is in a constant state of flux. People move here from other places for opportunities, then move on after a period of time when they are ready to settle down. All you can see when you live here are the people ready to move on. What you can't see are all those people everywhere else planning to move here.

I have had the same neighbors for nearly 20 yrs [no one has moved away but a few new houses have been built so people are moving in]. Honestly, I don't think the cost of living in LA is drastically higher than most other states except rural country. If you are struggling here you may very well be struggling in Austin [plus all the other downsides to living in Texas

Moving in with someone else is common until you can get on your feet. I believe most people have a partner/spouse to contribute to the purchase of a house in California [you need 2 incomes & sometimes more but it is worth it if you are happy.
