Hi,

We are moving to Pasadena from Northern California and are looking at purchasing or renting a single family home. The area we are considering is California blvd - east of Sierra Madre and west of S. Rosemead.

Question: Is this a safe\good neighborhood? We noticed plenty of high-end homes in the area but thought it would be good to check with local residents.

Thanks so much!

This is a very good neighborhood. Very close to San Marino. Further away from Rosemead Blvd and closer to Sierra Madre is best though. But you should be fine between California and Huntington Drive. It gets a wee bit sketchy between California to Colorado.

I live in this area and have intimate knowledge of the blocks.... You'll have to get a little more fine-grained than that The sketchy section is only between Del Mar and Colorado.. and it's only moderately sketchy. Walk across Del Mar to the south and it's completely different. Del Mar really is the "dividing line".

California is a great street all the way from Caltech to Rosemead... even all the way up to Rosemead which has multi-million dollar homes in the neighborhood called Chapman Woods.

All neighborhoods along the entire route are far from sketchy.

Now, I wouldn't want to live near any of the busy intersections, like Sierra Madre Blvd, San Gabriel Blvd, or Rosemead.. simply because of the business. Also, I wouldn't want my property to be along the wash just West of Madre... occasionally transients make their way down there. I've heard of very few problems with that.. .but I'd rather not have to think about it.

Finally, California is a moderately busy street. The lots are big, so it's not as bothersome, but I'd also look a block north.. San Pasqual (one of my favorite streets in Pasadena) and a block south on Lombardy or anywhere in Chapman Woods (bounded by Del Mar and Huntington, and Madre and Rosemead)

Pretty much accurate.. I can't think of any sketchy areas south of Del Mar.. there's a rare few between Del Mar and Colorado and more north of Colorado.

Guys, thanks so much for the quick feedback! It was very helpful!

Interestingly, while I was looking at houses around the area, I ended up speaking with two police officers that had stopped for a chat on California (halfway between Sierra Madre and Rosemead). During our conversation they conveyed that the area is very safe (and nice) with little-to-no issues. Their words were, "this is an affluent neighborhood."

Anyhow, I love this website! Hopefully this post will help others moving to the area, as I know it helped me immensely.

Your comment about the officer reminded me of another tip:

check out Crime Mapping - Building Safer Communities!

You can see on a map when/where crimes occurred and of what type. You'll see on there that the area you ask about is very low crime in comparison to most other places. Note: I don't think San Marino PD puts their stats in there... which is why there's a "hole" there... but Pasadena PD and the LA County sheriff (which patrols east California Blvd) do put their data in this database.
