Hi everyone - thanks for your responses.

It looks like we'll either be staying in Hollywood or Santa Monica.

While staying in Santa Monica would be cool, it appears that everything would be closer if we stayed in Hollywood to do the tourist thing.

Is Hollywood OK at night time in terms of safety, seediness, nightlife, etc.?

yes, hollywood is a more central location for doing all the touristy things. santa monica is more difficult to access, and all the sights there (the beach/pier and promenande) can be visited in a single morning or afternoon. the touristy area of hollywood is safe: it's full of tourists and cops. however, if you travel far enough east that the pedestrian crowd begins to thin significantly, you really need to turn around.

west hollywood (along the "sunset strip") is an even better choice, as all the activity is on the opposite end of the city from its one seedy pocket, and you can still get around quite easily. it also has better hotel options than hollywood.
