Hi,

I'm a student (17) in the UK and after my first year at University here I want to spend the summer in the US working. I have applied to an organisation called BUNAC and am very sure I will get the J-1 visa, which lets me stay and work anywhere in the US.

I have always wanted to work in the film industry (and I've learned about it, not just a wannabee actor, I could never act! haha). Obviously, LA is the most important place to be for anyone wanting to work in film. I know it's unlikely, but does anyone here have a job related to this?

I have a few questions I hope can be answered (by anyone):
- How much would a typical 'place' (flat I guess) cost to rent per week?
- How much is the average wage, per hour, in any job?
- Do you think my plan is practical, or is LA too expensive?
- Will having been to the US on a J-1 increase my chances of getting a permanent visa after graduating in 4/5 years?
- Any other advice?

Thanks for any help! http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...lies/smile.gif

Michael

the types of film industry jobs that can be done by a 17-year-old on summer break are given to kids with industry connections who are willing to work for free, or 22-year-olds with degrees who are willing to work for peanuts. i don't see a great deal of opportunity for you in that equation. the visa you are seeking is usually used to work in resort hotels and summer camps.

... which could be a good way to make industry connections, if you're working where the bigwigs vacation or send their kids...

LA industry people don't vacation or send their kids to camp in LA...and they don't network with the help.
