My son went to Long Beach CC for 1-1/2 semesters. He hated it. Then he enrolled at Cypress CC and loved it.

There are no admission standards to any community college. They will enroll anyone over 18 who is interested in learning. So in terms of the quality of the student bodies, there really isn't going to be that big of a difference between the different schools. The determining factors are going to be what is closest to where you live and dedication of specific instructors in specific classes.

I would worry a lot more about which classes to take and how strong a specific teacher is at teaching writing in an English class rather than whether SMC college is better than PCC.

If ur looking at going to a UC afterwards, Id check out the transfer rates. Santa Monica, Pasadena, El Camino and Mt. SAC are big feeders to UCLA.
Here's a good link that shows some rates: http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_8651994
