I'm always hearing sonic booms where I live-- whether it's police helicopters flying over (most common, probably at least 15 times a day), car alarms going off, fireworks, gun shots, etc, so no, I didn't notice any sound out of the ordinary earlier today.

I heard it at the gym in Hollywood. Thought someone had dropped some free-weights. My wife and six-year-old son heard it at home. They thought something had hit the roof, went out to investigate. Found nada, of course.

If these astronauts have the "right stuff", can't they put the shuttle into a slip and then lower its flaps to keep it under mach 1? Or, at least aim it over the Pacific before it passes the sound barrier? Who is NASA hiring these days, Jet Blue pilots?

Not too many police helicopters travel faster than the speed of sound. My son and I heard it in South Pas. Earlier we were on the roof putting up Christmas lights and I thought "Did I leave the little guy up there and he fell off?" We did not hear the double sonic boom I've heard before.

Uh, no, they can't. Landing the friggin' space shuttle is not like playing with a toy airplane. I do hope you're being facetious and not just plain silly.

There might have been an opportunity to hear more booms. For a while, Shuttles were to be launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base (for launches into polar orbit) and (presumably??) land in California.

Shuttle Enterprise in Palmdale with some recognizable people???

Uh, why is it most of the time the shuttle lands at Edwards we don't hear a sonic boom? Was the air particularly dense yesterday?

Pretty cool is all I'm saying. Wish I could have seen it come in.
Eh, sorry about that. Those beans do it every time.

Amazingly enough the laws of physics are just a wee bit difficult to overcome. The shuttle's range (It is a glider at the point of re-entry into the atmosphere) at under Mach 1 isn't very far. I assume you wouldn't want it crashing into the San Bernadino Mountains.

The sonic boom always occurs. Air density may affect how far away it is heard as well as the temperature and possible inversion layers in the atmosphere.

I was in the SF Bay Area when one shuttle mission passed directly over on it's way to FL in the early morning hours. The glow of the heat from it was plainly visible for several minutes, 23 minutes later it landed in FL.

THAT WAS VERY COOL
