I'm looking at a possible short term move from Florida to LA. I work as a RN so I can probably get a job in one of the hospitals. What area's are safe but close to the shore with reasonable rent. I would like a small rental house as a first choice. My allergies are killing me here in the spring so I want out. LA was actually ranked as one of the best places for allergy sufferers. My last visit to LA was 2 years ago and I really liked the newport/Irvine area but the real estate was sky high.

Well if it's just you, why get a house and kill yourself trying to pay it? There's plenty of apartments near the shore in LA to your liking. But you said reasonable rent... It doesn't exist in LA. Especially not near the beach. But then again, if your budget is high you can find plenty of good apartments in the area.

Oh I'm sorry I forgot about your other question. Some good areas to live in LA are Burbank, Los Feliz, & Silverlake. I didn't name much but those are the ones that come to mind at the moment. You might want to heavily consider Burbank. It's one of the LA's best kept affordable secrets. When I see young people on TV that just moved to LA and are in horrible looking apartments that they probably paid $1,300 or more for, I feel bad for them. They could have had the same apartment price in a decent looking place in a decent area around Burbank. And I'm talking about a 2 bedroom maybe 3 bedroom. You could find a 1 bedroom/Studio in Burbank for $800-900.

You might want to look at Palms.

Palms, Los Angeles, CA on LA Life

The entire site is pretty good for a getting a sense of what neighborhoods you might be interested in.
