We will going to LA from San Diego in January and will be there on my husband's birthday. Can anyone recommend a nice restaurant? We like all kind of food, so all recs are appreciated. Thanks!

Well, this isn't in San Diego, but in La Jolla but it offers amazing views and is quite reasonable http://www.georgesatthecove.com/

I guess more casual than romantic, since our friend will be with us.

We live down the street from George's and hate it. It's overrated and seems to be geared toward tourists.

Anywhere. We'll have a car and are willing to drive anywhere. Santa Monica would be nice, but we are really open to anything.

Pizzeria Mozza (at Melrose and Highland) is a nice, upscale place that fits a lot of your needs. Also, Cobras and Matadors on Beverly (which has a BYOB with no corkage fee).

Though the food is not world class, Yamashiro offers stunning city views, which would be an "only-in-LA" plus. Figuring you have access to plenty of seaside options in SD.

Try the Formosa Cafe for good food and drinks, and an awesome slice of Hollywood history. Frank Sinatra used to mourn the loss of Ava Gardner up at the bar!

Formosa Cafe :: Home

I miss this place!

For Mexican, I also love El Compadre on Sunset in Hollywood.

If you like sushi and want a celebrity sighting, try Katsuya on Sunset in Hollywood or Nobu in Malibu.

Thanks for the recs. We actually have a Cafe Sevilla here in SD that has flamenco dancers. It's a tapas place. I love the Polish suggestion, being that I'm from there. I think I found a winner! Thanks again!

Oh, sorry I read the initial post incorrectly. If in Santa Monica, I sometimes go to the Lobster. Great views as well, but somewhat overpriced. Actually, not as 'touristy' as George's but some would say otherwise.
