Hi, good morning:

We're moving to LA to pursue music, and we have a friend who says we can stay with him until we get settled. He lives in an apartment near the southeast corner of Griffith Park, around the intersection of Los Felix Boulevard and Riverside Drive (on Veselich Ave., to be exact).

I think this is the Atwater Village area, which is Northwest of downtown.

Does anyone know what sort of area that is?

Thanks!

It's nice and very convenient. Make that very VERY convenient, especially as you are pursuing music.

I am in that area a lot - it has everything you could want, and beautiful scenery as well.

Thanks for your response, timeless. Yeah, I see that's it's Glendale.

I wrote the LA AFM to find out where most of the studio work is for musicians. Do you happen to know? I want to try to live near where I work so I don't spend half my life on the freeway.

Thanks!

the unfotunate thing about LA is that it is very spread out. Entertainment jobs are located all over the city, including the Valley, Hollywood, and Westside. Glendale/Lose Feliz/Atwater Village would probably not be an ideal location for a permanent move in the long run if you are concerned with commute times, especially if you'll be working on the westside of town. Definitely take advantage of your friend's offer in the mean time and get to know the city better.

There will be alot of artsy/music type things in that area - atwater/los feliz/silverlake but as they said it is spread out so there will be some in Hollywood/West Hollywood too... which is not that far away.

That Atwater area is very nice, artsy, walkable, somewhat cheap compared to the West L.A. area. I think it's the perfect location because you are close to everything and yet it's safe

Atwater's perfectly fine nowadays. The out of control drug activity of the late '80s and early '90s is but a memory. Gentrification's gone far enough that I really don't see Atwater reverting to what it used to be. (OTOH Highland Park, which isn't that far away, is a different story - I could easily see the economic crisis causing things to get really nasty there, as gentrification is still somewhat embryonic). I do like the neighborhood, although Hollywood and West Hollywood/Fairfax (and the nearby Miracle Mile area) are probably more centrally located if one has to work on the west side.

It's a nice area. About as central as you can get. West LA is a bit of a trip though.

There are things to do & good shopping nearby. It is a bit hot compared to West LA during summer. Musicians seem to flock to Hollywood region which is fairly close to Atwater. If the city ever makes the Los Angeles river a park then Atwater village will have more bike trails.
