Sydney to Los Angeles (real estate, rentals, living)

Hi

My partner and I are looking at moving to Los Angeles mid this year from Sydney Australia.

I was hoping some locals could provide a few good real estate sites for rentals so I can get an idea of prices etc. Also do most rentals only do 1yr leases or are they flexible in doing 3 or 6 months? We are planning on staying a while but do not want to be tired down to a place till we get to know the city and what areas we like.

I also wanted to get an idea of living expenses in terms of average bills for electricity/gas, cable, internet, phone, food etc for a young couple. Also is there a few major companies you go through for these or is there numerous to choose from? If so is there any sites that compare companies etc. Also cell/mobile phones what are the main companies i should look at?

And finally my partner will have work, however I will be looking for work. I know its not exactly the best year for it but if you could please recommend some the main career/job sites and any recruitment companies. I'm currently working for a major bank as a project manager. I know its pretty grim getting a job in my industry at the moment but do you see it picking up at all this yr? Im pretty flexible with the type of job i get as the move is more for my partner.
