From New Jersey. Miss it badly. I do completely see the beauty of California. That isn't it. It's just that it isn't...home.

Default Home away from "home"

Born in Europe, moved to CA as a teenager with my parents in the mid-70s. Though I've traveled to many other U.S. states, I've lived continuously in CA since moving here 30+ years ago. For me, California is home because I'm surrounded by many folks just like me -- foreign born or transplants from other U.S. states, bi- and tri-cultural individuals, "away" yet "home" in CA, as I'm sure many of you can identify with. I'm a Naturalized U.S. Citizen for 16 years.

That is an interesting article. While it highlights how native Californians are staying put it also shows that out of staters are staying away in higher numbers. Basically, California will have to restore itself from the inside out.

I'll address the OP's original question (even though the thread is really old).

I am a fourth generation Californian. My great-grandfather brought his family here from Louisiana during the depression. That is my mother's side. My father was born in Alabama and came here as a teen in the 1960s. Through him I do some have connection to Southern culture. But still I am a West Coast guy through and through.
