How about something fun for a change? One of my hobbies is electronics. I am currently studying it in my homestate. I learned about these neon signals last year. They are really pretty. I think it would be really romantic to walk under these at time with a gentle, summer breeze on a nightly stroll. They glow like candles at night.
I know that parts of Los Angeles and Orange County use these as opposed to the more common DONT WALK lenses (or more modern hand/man lenses). These neon signals I am talking about have the tubes exposed as seen on signalfan.com.
As far as my observations go, there seems to be a fair concentration of WAIT/WALK and DON'T WALK signals. These were installed in the late 50s and early 60s, followed by DONT WALK later on. All were installed by Econolite, which later became Indicator Traffic Controls. I first saw these in driver ed films from the 1970s and various movies.
A pair of Armernian girls I met last year told me these were really pretty. They said these were less common in Calabasas but more common near the ocean and south Los Angeles.
One last thing, signalfan.com is a resource to learn about the history of traffic control and evolution of signals. I really enjoyed it.
