my husband and I are trying to buy a house. He has a education loan for a school(not through the goverment) that has been charged off. His FICO is about 640 and mine is 690. I have been told to let sleeping dogs lie and do not try to fix it. We have been tempted to call the collection agency however is it worth it to go through this? We have no way to pay it off in a lump sum. Should we try to work out a pmt plan? Or try without making a effort to fix it.

If it is a current loan then the lender will most likely pay it off while financing your mortgage. Banks don't want borrowers to have debt when purchasing. How long has it been since the write-off as EscapeCalifornia asked? What confirmation do you have that the company has written off the debt? You don't want anyone to put a lien on your property because you owe a debt.
