I think that's correct, there's no way for the gov't to track if people stay unemployed after their unemployment checks ends or if they are not on welfare. So they count them back into the workforce.

So there's a strong possibility that the unemployment rate is a helluva lot worse than what the statistics convey. Christ, that's a scary thought...

This is from the site that I linked in my prior post:

Some people think that to get these figures on unemployment the Government uses the number of persons filing claims for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits under State or Federal Government programs. But some people are still jobless when their benefits run out, and many more are not eligible at all or delay or never apply for benefits. So, quite clearly, UI information cannot be used as a source for complete information on the number of unemployed.

But dammit, it makes a great panicky news blurb. People love stats, even if they're not entirely sure what they mean or how they were tabulated

Gvt stats are always sloppy...usually understate bad news and overstate good news

That said, some of weakest, most overpaid workers anywhere are government workers

Upside of recession is getting rid of weak workers and companies....unfortunately, many hard-working, competent people lose their jobs, yet many lazy, inept workers keep their jobs, even in a poor economy

Part of why CA's economy is so dynamic and powerful (vs rest of US, let alone socialist EU) is that many talented people (sometimes erroneously laid-off b/c of economy) start own businesses (and create new jobs and much wealth for themselves) in difficult times....a dynamic economy lets market "vote" w/own bucks re: which cos. (and their workers) offer a valuable good/service...and which don't....

One of the biggest problems with running a business in California (and New York) are the high taxes. States like Arizona, Texas and the rest of the sunbelt offer better incentives for companies to relocate operations there with much lower taxes. For as much as highly taxed states like CA, NY and some of the rustbelters give to the government, they get shockingly little in return.

A 9.9% official governmental number of unemployment could mean an over 11% or more real unemployment rate if we include all of those who gave up seeking employment. People who send out hundreds or even thousands of resumes and applications and get negative responses will eventually give up totally.

And they don't count those paid under the table either. With the hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of illegal immigrants getting paid under the table that have lost a job, that number would be much higher.

Not saying everyone paid under the table is illegal though. I'm a 16 y.o. white kid born and raised in LA getting paid cash that just got laid off yesterday so now I'm unemployed along with the other hundreds of thousands of Angelenos.
