Where did you hear this?

If this is true, then that's horrible.

i have many friends in LA that are actors, stuntmen, trainers etc etc. they work for 6 months, then collect unemployment till they get a new gig. how do you think that figures in? that aspect is simply unlike any other state/city etc.

also, la county is massive. extremely diverse in types of labour. people on west side do very different things then people inland. lots of variety out there.

One thing I don't see too much of in LA: Stores closing. Now I know some major chains have gone out of business (Circuit City, Linens & Things, Mervyns, etc.) but if you read Google news, you'll see a lot of states are doing worse in the "stores closing" department.

I know this isn't LA, but it is close enough. This thread below sends a powerful message.

Charles,

While that seems like a lot, read here: U.S. Retail Property Market Bracing for a Long Year in 2009 - CoStar Group

From that report:

VACANCY RATES
While the ranking within the 10 markets with the lowest overall retail vacancy has shifted some this quarter, the markets are the same as the previous two quarters, with the exception of Long Island. It is important to note, however, that while these markets remain tight, fourth quarter marked the first measurably noticeable rise in vacancy for all of these markets.

The ranking, based on total vacancy rate: New York City (2.4%), San Francisco (2.6%), South Bay/San Jose (3.6%), San Diego (3.6%), Orange County, CA (3.8%), Los Angeles (3.9%), Washington, D.C. (4.2%), East Bay/Oakland (4.2%), Miami-Dade County, FL (4.3%), and Long Island (4.3%).

<snip>

Eight of the 10 markets with the highest overall retail vacancy rates are the same this quarter as last -- Cincinnati and Columbus dropped off the list, while Phoenix and Birmingham were added. It is important to note that all of the markets in this top 10 recorded a rise in vacancy over the previous quarter.

The ranking, based on total vacancy rate: Detroit (10.6%), Kansas City (10.0%), Indianapolis (9.9%), Memphis (9.8%), Dayton (9.7%), Phoenix (9.3%), Dallas/Ft. Worth (9.1%), Atlanta (9.1%), Houston (9.0%), and Birmingham (8.8%).

So while it seems like OC and LA's retail real estate is suffering from a lot of closures, we are still better off than most areas.

This relatively high unemployment rate makes the people that say "L.A is where the jobs are" look stupid.

It's funny because places that people think of as in the "middle of nowhere" or with nothing going on..can have unemployment rates of under 5%.

The problem is most people don't read or research into places including their own cities.
