I just got married to an american and received my new social security card, employment authorization card and my conditional permanent residence card. I just finished my MBA as an international student and now that I am legally in the states, we would like to buy a house, would I be able to get a mortgage?

You just earned an MBA and you are asking an internet forum if you can get a mortgage?

Here's a website to maybe give you some guidance. Other than that, why not call a bank and speak to someone in their "home mortgage department"? FHA Loan Debt to Income Ratios: Facts and Guidelines
How about contacting a realtor, they are usually pretty knowledgeable about the loan process and the requirements to qualify.

Things to consider BEFORE purchasing a home (that realtors, etc won't tell you):
1) Check out the zip code, city, address on California Megan's Law - California Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General and look for how many, who, and where the sex offenders are.
2) Contact the local police department and inquire about the crime stats
3) Contact your insurance company and inquire how much your auto & homeowner's insurance would be (they raise/lower insurance rates based on their knowledge of crime in the area)
etc.....

Obviously owning a home is a HUGE investment. By doing a lot of research prior to purchasing, you'll be making a wiser investment. Remember the old adage....it's better to buy the worst house in the best neighborhood (NOT the best house in the worst neighborhood)!

Best of luck.

Stay safe.

3 years steady employment
high FICO
nice downpayment

Without these things I would not buy a house unless I had a huge amount of cash laying around. Without these you will probably not get a great loan anyways.

Good one, Charles! The forum software prevented me from adding to your reputation.

To the OP, you are probably going to need a documented job history showing your ability to work, plus a reasonable down payment, perhaps 10-20 percent of purchase price.

The days of "nothing down, and cross your fingers when you tell them your income, wink wink, nod nod" are over.
