Have a female friend who just got a job and needs a place in either Seal, Long or Huntington Beach. Looking for the safest area. Probably going to be renting an upscale condo or townhouse in the 2k per month range....any recommendations? She's the type who would walk to starbucks with her laptop and hang out there for a couple hours.

Seal and Huntington Beach are much safer than Long Beach. Both have "downtowns" too.

I am the last one to defend Long Beach, but over on 2nd street or Naples is pretty darn nice.

Any of those cities would be fine. I am a Long Beach native, so certainly more partial to my own city. As suggested above, I do not think you can go wrong with the Belmont Shore or Naples areas of LB. Apartments are within the price you mention, and Starbuck's is a favored hangout of many locals. Obviously there are less desirable areas of the city, just as there are of Huntington Beach. Overall, Seal Beach is nice all around - but no Starbuck's on Main Street - yet. I suggest that your firiend check out the Grunion Gazette for rentals as well as to get a flavor of the Shore and Naples areas of LB. Avoid the Press Telegram as all it is is gloom and doom and not the best representation of our town.

I love reading the Grunion Gazette, it is the only paper I will read front to back. And it is a free paper. Do they still host the valentines party on the Queen Mary?

Yes, every year. I went a few years ago - it wasn't all that organized, I saw my "match" was there, but never found him ........

I found my match one night back in 96 or so, maybe not the best of choices, but I turned away and removed my tag (I thought she had not seen me). I seen her later with a new tag that read "looking".

Belmont Shores gets my vote. Totally walkable, fits the laptop and Starbucks thing and has a nightlife.

I agree, but don't forget to check out the coffee/cafe places on Broadway and also 4th Street.
