Interesting article , I think I remember reading that one .
Interesting that it says many of the stores are operated as loss leaders and used for marketing /branding .
I've heard the same about many of the flagship type stores on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills .

Good article. I do a lot of work in Venice. I've known the top realtor there for over 20 years and her business is nothing short of amazing.

I lived in Venice, off Rose ave, in the 70's. It was wonderful. Only reason I left was, I had a job offer in Hawaii.

If you are wondering why the rental housing market in a place like Venice Beach is so tight, look no further than your nearest laptop. Fire it up and find dozens of websites advertising hotels and houses “just steps from the sand.”

Where have all the houses gone? Gone to tourists, every one. (How short-term rentals have worsened Venice Beach's rental crisis.) - LA Times

The Tabors also built bungalows in Palms, on Motor Avenue, which are still there. Some of them still live in their property. Tabor Street in Palms and Mar Vista is named after tham.
