Much appreciation to the one for the Weiland Brewery recommendation. I Yelp!'ed around further and Weiland's is the only worthwile brewery in the city proper, it seems. Breweries are usually where you get the best bang for the buck. I checked on a couple of others and--granted I haven't visited them--their websites make them look way too Gordon Biersch, and worse. Overstyled and overpriced for the overdressed, as usual.

This LA Beer Fest in Culver City in a couple of weeks looks good though:

LOS ANGELES BEER FESTIVAL

$40 for unlimited 4oz pours and dozens of breweries represented, including local. Sounds like an uncommon bargain. Could be the place to gather more intel on the local scene.

when you go to weilands happy hour make sure to get garlic fries and buffalo shrimp. each costs about 4 bucks. some of the best bar food (for the price)
