You can many of those qualities (using independent and urban) in several fine neighborhoods; Venice, Silverlake, Los Feliz, Hollywood, North Hollywood, Santa Monica and even Downtown. Venice is probably your best bet. Its extremely walkable, has a huge, burgeoning art and indie scene and has the galleries,farmer markets and diversity you seek.
