I've tryed to take some diferent way in University then Cinema but one year after i start i saw i was wrong. I was studying Mecanics one year and another programming. Two things i almost like. But i wasn't happy and stoped doing that. Then i realized that what i wanna really do is Editing and Directing Movies. And that's what i wanna do for the rest of my life. Now I Hask you. Should i Move to the US and try my luck? Should i try to make my dream come true. Do i have any chances at least?

Hi Rui,

I am a student editor in college and there are plenty of jobs for editors. I have also heard that some of the best directors were editors first, because they know what kind of shots they need. Life is short, so there's no point in wasting your time doing a job you hate. For years. Be the best editor and director you can be and you'll do fine. I love editing, and it's something I can do for 30 years without being miserable. Good luck!

Hi Rui,

I got your message. I don't know your budget, but I would start with Pasadena City College in California. You can check out their classes at www.pasadena.edu. They have great editing classes where you learn to work on Avid. Do you know any editing programs, like Final Cut Pro and Avid? If not, start at Pasadena City College, where you can get financial aid and scholarships. If you want to go further, transfer to Art Center College of Design (but it's expensive) or California State University at Long Beach. They have a great editing program as well, and give a lot of help to international students. You can also find info on the Editors Guild website, and workshops for apprentice editors on the A.C.E. website at ace-filmeditors.org. Best of luck.

I hope the word choices in the initial post aren't an indication of the editing ability.

That's not nice. Rui is Portuguese, so writing in English is probably as difficult for Rui as writing in Portuguese would be for you. Besides, everyone has to start somewhere. Editing takes time and practice to master.
