I am a recent college graduate and I have always been interested in law enforcement. I have applied with a few agencies here in the Houston area and as I wait to hear from them I was thinking about applying also to LAPD. I come from Houston, Texas so I am used to a big city and my dad worked for HPD for 17 years, I know the life of a big city police officer. I read on their website that with my Bachelor's degree I will be making around $61,000 - $64,000 a year. Is this enough to find a decent place to live in a nicer suburb or neighborhood of Los Angeles? I don't want to be living in a place that when I get off from work I come home to a neighborhood just as bad as what I just left.

The cost of living is much higher in LA than Houston, especially when it comes to housing. If you're looking to own a suburban, single family home on a police officer's salary, I suspect that would be easier to achieve in Houston, though I don't know what starting salaries are there.

its possible. but once you factor in kids and pets and an SO, then its a bit harder. but yes i know plenty who do it.

alot tend to live out side of LA proper tho. just earlier today i ran into an old buddy. a CHP. he moved out of LA and commutes 80 miles (1way) to get to work. granted he does that 4 days out of the week, but its still a long commute. its not the money part that pushed him towards the sticks, it was the safety. cops are targets in LA> a buddy of mine was killed by some thugs while leaving his parents home. he had been staying there temporarily while "closing" on a home about 60 miles outside of LA. its dangerous. so, many cops choose to live outside of LA, and the further you move the cheaper or more expensive it gets, just depends where. one thing is for sure... they feel safer out there.

One thing for sure $
61,000-64,000 will get you out of the ghetto. Have you looked into the Acton Area?
I know of LAPD and La County sheriff who took the training In Los Angeles and work their for three years and then got the Ha out of California. Los Angeles training is one of the best. And after you have been on the job for I believe three years you can leave without paying for all the training. And get a job most any where. Not sure of the time frame but check it out.

When my brother applied to be an LAPD officer, he brought back some paperwork and the duration was 5 years. It may have changed since then because this was around 6 years ago. According to the calculation table in the paperwork, the amount you would owe the LAPD was about $1000 for every month left before the 5-year period ended.

My brother's wife did this >>> when she saw that.

If you are a young guy/gal do the five years and get out. with LAPD training you could go anywhere you want and fined a job in police work.
