The only people sucked in by the glorification in movies, music, and television are the wanna-be suburban white kids.
Nothing's more hilarious than some white kid from Mission Viejo flashing signs, wearing fifty pounds of bling, affecting the accent and referring to himself as "OG". Oh gee you're an idiot.

The real thing was pretty prominent long before gangsta rap and Menace II Society. The kids don't need to see it on a TV in their living room, they can see it on the streets in front of their house.
I'm talking more about the reason kids stay in that lifestyle as opposed to overcoming it. Sure, they see it on the streets where they live, but without the glorification of it they see on TV and hear on the radio, more kids may see that it doesn't lead anywhere.
The same thing happened where I grew up in the midwest. Country music glamorized the "redneck" lifestyle, and a lot of kids in my class grew up thinking that's all they want to be and had no aspirations to leave our small town. Now those same kids have multiple kids, no money, and are generally very unhappy. I'm not saying that's why they are the way they are, but people like Larry the Cable Guy don't exactly help.

Look, I hate people and have virtually no hope for humanity, but even I doubt people are that stupid.
Dirt shoveling sucks and you can tell people how great it is to earn minimum wage while doing backbreaking labor for eight plus hours a day for the rest of your life all you want, but most people are going to realize it is bulls--t. The Communist countries always tried to tell everyone how great the system was, but the people weren't stupid and saw the inefficiency, corruption, and lack of goods and services.
Hell, a lot of people in the ghetto are blunt and say they hate the ghetto, sure they like the community, being around people of a similar ethnic background, but things like poverty, high crime, little to do, and police harrassment tend to put a damper on the ghetto love.
I have wondered that myself. I understand they started as a sort of neighborhood watch program, which is fine, but once they became domestic terrorists, why didn't the communities step in?
Yea, it's a long story and I don't have all the answers but reviewing all the documentary's as well as documentation/books it appears that all gangs; at least in L.A, regardless if they were black or Hispanic all started with good intentions such as protecting there community's and looking out for each other because they were being picked on from other racial groups (whites).
However (and I'm not appealing to sympathy) somewhere along the way the CIA and other sectors of Government got involved and learned to manipulate these targeted "gangs" by infiltrating these groups and causing internal conflict and introducing drugs along with military grade weapons.
Literally, the Government created a storm that now feeds on itself to survive and the government just sits back and reaps the benefits due to creating Police jobs all the way to keeping the prisons full.
As far as community's stepping in; according to underground scholars, as well as from what I have seen, there have been attempts ( at least with the Black side) but nothing to radically shift the consciousness of the entire AA community at once.
Despite the fact that I'm a political atheist, I say the latest good that has happened to the AA community is Barack Obama.

Well the inner city kids are sucked into it too! Actually, even more so because it becomes a way of life for many of the inner city kids where as the suburban kids seem outgrow this phase and move on to become doctors and business owners.
