Hermosa, Manhattan, Redondo, Torrance ... all way too crowded and expensive now days. I'm born and raised in these areas and still work there but I gave up and moved to Orange county where life is much better. If I had to move back then PV or south/west Torrance would be ok I guess.

How would you compare these areas to Santa Monica and Venice Beach?
Are they basically the same or are they less expensive and less crowded?

Don't like Santa Monica because of their rich people and everything is expensive.
Don't like Venice because there's too many young wannabes and people thinking they're something they're not. Would this disappear if I moved to Hermosa/Manhattan/Redondo?
Low prices and good surf is all I ask for.

I would never live in Santa Monica or Venice, too many unpredictable people. After you head north of LAX, the closer to downtown LA the worse it gets. The south bay (Torrance/Redondo/Hermosa/PV) was a great place and still has good areas but its really getting crowded. The people are generally predictable.
The OC has the best surf.
