Where do you work? Is yours a two-parent family? Are you both working, or is one of you at home with your young children?

I have not heard of a safe, scenic place with houses for rent in your specified budget. You maybe could find a 2BR townhome though. classifieds - craigslist

I currently live in the Santa Monica area, I have two young children (under the age of 5). We are in a one bed apartment paying $1475. I've grown to love this place for it's beauty and safety and location however, it is not longer practical to be here as I crave a more spacious abode for my family - and somewhere where the dollar will stretch a little further.

I'm open to Orange county as well as LA county - ideally somewhere scenic, within easy driving distance to the coast - somewhere with a very good school system, family orientated and somewhere I can actually rent a HOUSE as opposed to apartment living. I cannot go beyond $1550 in rent - do I have any viable options? Someone mentioned Oceanside, Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo and Costa Mesa, - I'm not familiar with these places.

Can anyone offer any suggestions or further insight?

Thank you in advance.
Well I don't know any area in So.Cal that lives up to your expectations so far. But I do know that there are extremely decent housing market in Murrieta right now which I think is in the Riverside county. But the rents are lower and housing is very-modern but affordable. I would look into Murrieta or close-by Temecula.

try whittier. or alhambra. lots of nice cities in the san gabriel valley.

you can also look towards gardena, torrance. but the southbay does get a bit pricey.

there are a lot of family oriented neighborhoods in LACo. if you are considering the OC, then these places, while a bit far from the beach and such, are still within reasonable distance. look at the cities of south east LA Co, that border OC. they are rather nice.
