It depends on your age, how long you will be in the state and what you mean by "cool'?

L.A. is cool, so is San Francisco or Laguna Beach, as well as Marin County, with time in Sausalito. San Louis Obispo is great, so are the little towns in the Redwood forest toward Humbolt county. Don't forget Napa and Sanoma. There in La Jolla and San Diego with a drive across the bridge to Coranado. i think you get the picture, there is not one answer..

I'd also give Marin County props. Just a bridge away from the City, and miles of Epic country roads to motorcycle ride .

California is just cool in general as long as you stay out of the high crime areas and the Moderator cut: language areas.
