LA (like Chicago) unfortunately just has a much smaller industrial base of leading hedge funds and tech cos. that tend to attract top grads of places like Stanford engineering or Wharton finance undergrad

LA tends to be a favored wkend playground after guys in Silicon Valley or NYC (or Dallas or Chic or Seattle, etc) make a few bucks and have more free time to get into trouble

Obviously an education will give you the security and high income to live fruitful, but why are those, like myself, looked down upon for living a much simpler life? I am a handyman, no college and I make a living on my own with no boss. I am happy...with the exception of being stuck in Indiana. I just don't get all the people who say it's so impossible to live in LA yet millions of people are doing it. I don't want to be a filthy rich snobby movie star, or some fancy prick in a 2,000. suit and a plastic smile, but I do want to live in So Ca.
That's not necessarily true since there are million's of people living here, with only about 25% of people with a college degree. Although many people in LA probably do live beyond their means, since image is everything in LA and many people buy things they can't afford (LA ranks in the top 5 for debt). You can live a simple life in LA but that doesn't mean it'll be cheap. Even a small fixer-upper house in a decent neighborhood will probably cost you around 400 - 500K, which would buy a lot in many other cities.
