For me, it took around 4 hours flying when you factor in waiting time at the airport, flight delays, waiting for baggage, etc. (the flight itself is only a little over an hour or so). I usually flew just because the drive bored me but when I had another person with me we chose to drive. The drive in and out of L.A. is fun, but the drive up the 5 is BORING!

I'm almost always delayed flying into or out of SFO because of fog!

I think we've sort of written off San Francisco at this point. The drive is too long and, as someone pointed out, flying can be just as long when airport wait time, delays, etc. are factored in.

I had also considered Santa Barbara, but it seems rather expensive. Can anyone recommend another fun place, perhaps between LA and San Fran? I'm sure there are TONS of gems out there, I'm just too much of a CA newbie to really know what they are.
