Didn't Van Halen start in the L.A. area (Pasadena)? They, too, were quite notable, having sold 56 million albums worldwide, compared to The Doors 50 million (according to Wikipedia).
Now that I think of it, those are good points. So is the mention of the Beach Boys.

According to my daughter:

Avenged Sevenfold is totally like the best rock band from So Cal. (Newport Beach)
Halifax, InMemory, Homegrown (all from Thousand Oaks)

Thats all for now!

There are too many popular L.A. acts to name over the years. The Doors, the Byrds, Guns and Roses, CSN really got together at Joni Mitchell's place up in Laurel Canyon, Sonny and Cher (well, not great, but notable), Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Poison, Metallica (when Ron McGoveney was their bass player), Love, the Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, The Runaways (featuring Joan Jett), Toto, Steely Dan, Steve Martin, X, the Blasters, The Plimsouls, No Doubt, the Righteous Brothers, the Go-Gos, the Buffalo Springfield, etc.

Now that I think about it, Oingo Boingo was also from L.A.

We've also got to give credit to the gals in the business. Both The Bangles and The Go-Gos were from L.A.
Also, don't forget about Lone Justice with Maria McKee on lead vocals.

If someone's already mentioned any of these, I apologize for duplicating them.
(I just checked and the Go-Gos were mentioned already by RobE)

I'm sure if I think about it for long enough, I'd be able to come up with a lot more.

Los Lobos
The Byrds (mentioned above by RobE)
The Flying Burrito Brothers

The Beach Boys. Arguably the greatest American band ever.

Jeff Buckley is Orange County. The hype is currently surrounding Cold War Kids, also from Orange County. Maroon Five, is sort of pop/rock from LA. Among the biggest bands today.

Many good bands mentioned, especially Van Halen. I never cared for Poison too much though.. Dokken is still one of the best bands from the 1980s era, and I also believe they were from the LA area, correct?
