We are an Italian married couple in our 50's, and we were planning to spend 2 or 3 weeks in the LA area. This would be our first visit to LA. I am looking for a nice, easy, not too busy part of the city, and of course a nice, easy, etc. hotel or b&b. Any suggestions?

What is your budget for lodging?
Will you have a personal vehicle?
Do you have an agenda or itinerary for sightseeing or visits?

We stayed in the Sanborn Guest House about four years ago when we came to LA to look for housing. From the website it doesn't look like it's changed much. There were two rooms and a shared kitchen, which was nice. It's in Silver Lake, which is an interesting residental neighborhood, but with lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance, too.
Sanborn Guest House, a Los Angeles Silverlake Inn providing Hollywood charm and comfort.

One suggestion: it can take a long time to get around the area due to traffic, long distances, etc. If you'll be here 2 to 3 weeks you may want to spend some time in one location (maybe by the beaches), then midway through your stay move to a different place, then maybe even a third. It would not only make things easy from a sightseeing point of view, but would also let you experience a couple of different neighborhoods/enviornments.

Santa Monica along the coast. Nice area, walking distance to many shops and restaurants. quiet in the evenings, nice views of the ocean.

Close to beverly hills, malibu and drivable to Hollywood if you prefer.

Many of the hotels are offering discounts if you ask or suggest the rate is more than you want to pay. There are a lot of vacancies.

Thanks very much to all of you for the answers! Uptown Urb, GreggD, I'll look into Sanborn Guest House and the Santa Monica area and will let you know. Charles, no, we haven't established a budget yet and, yes, we will rent a car once in LA. As to sightseeing, besides the "classics" (Hollywood studios, Rodeo Drive, Mulholland Drive, etc.), being both me and my wife old rock fans, we wanted to see a few Eagles, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, etc. hangouts: the Troubadour, the Ash Grove Music Club, Laurel Canyon, . . .
