I used to make the commute and it is doable but further than the other options. Basically you go to the 110 which connects to the 91.

Agree with these locations for the shortest drive time. And commute is a factor. Although its not the only factor.

The thing to do is come out and check out the areas. Then do the drive from your furthest out option such as Redondo and see what you think. A lot depends on your scehdule and tolerance for traffic. I used to prefer to leave earlier to beat the main traffic and then return earlier as well. That can make a big difference if it is an option. In LA its not the distance that gets you but the direction you are going and the amount off ppl on the road at that time. Heading toward east on the 91 in the early AM isn't as bad as lets say heading toward airport or West LA down the 405.

the good thing about seal and sunset is that you can live in that quiet area but still be near long beach and h.b/newp. etc...

Excellent. Thank you guys for the input, I'm going on a work trip next week and am bringing my wife with for the week, we are goign to check out all those places. Surfing is not a big deal, but I do like waves and would like to start picking up surfing (or at least continue my childhood "boogy boarding" experiece ;-)... Seal Beach sounds interesting as well, I will look into it. Thanks again!

Seal Beach is also one of the best places to learn to surf. On its north end it has two jettys. And smaller waves break down the middle for a long distance. My father taught me and my friends how to surf there. Way back then it used to also be called 'warm water' jetty because they cooled some kind of machinery with the ocean water which then ran back into the ocean. So you could ride the waves year round without a wetsuit. I don't know if that is still the case today. But even so it is nice little town and fun place.

The water is definitely as cold as everywhere else(I think it's in the mid 60s right now, was plenty cold this weekend but not as bad as I remember). Seal is a fun place to boogie board as well

All 3 are fun places to live for young couples w/no kids.

Here is my opinion on the 3:

Long Beach - Stay close to the beach, country club, or Orange County borders. Better city life, architecture, and public transit than Seal and HB. Great unique stores on Retro Row and in Belmont Shore. Great freeway access. 110 (over bridges), 710, 405, 605, 22 all accessible. No Waves though, dirty water, high crime in many west/central inland parts of the city.

Seal Beach - Laid back beach community. Not as much to do as LB or HB as far as nightlife goes but Main St is awesome. Quieter than the bigger two. It's much smaller (good or bad depending on what you're looking for). Nice beach, smaller waves than HB, gets dirty after a rain. Right next to 22/605/405.

Huntington Beach - The best actual beach among the three, cleanest water, best waves. The city is very cookie cutter though if you ask me. Lots of tract homes, chains, and national retailers. Driving inland is kind of a pain. Suburbia by the beach.
