Okay, a relative of mine works in Hollywood (big time hair stylist) wants me and my nine yr old daughter to move out to LA (we are looking in Sherman Oaks and Encino, Studio City and Hollywood) Someone help me - I have looked and looked at houses - we are going to rent for at least 1-2 years. I grew up in Texas! Love the weather, not too sure about the schools, afraid of earthquakes ) I need some good, solid unbias advice. If we hate it, we can move back - pros and cons - bring them on! Any advice about schools, areas, how to stay safe - etc Thanks!

Why do you want to move to LA?
Where are your folks?
What line of work are you in?
Where are you going to work?
What is your housing budget?
Is your kid's dad in the picture? Is he cool about his daughter moving to LA?

I lived in So California for 12 years. We are in northern california now and theres a reason we did not stay in L.A. It sucks!
Stay in Texas ar find a more user friendly area in california for a single Mom and daughter. Its Very expensive to live in the Hollywood area so you need big income. It would be a hugh culture shock for your daughter.
Hope this helps you!!

LA can be a great place for raising kids, but that depends on whether or not you can afford it. Get a job lined up first before you move. Daycare can be very expensive, but at least for much of the year your daughter would be in school for a larger portion of the day. Schools can vary; there are some very good schools, and some schools with major problems. As far as earthquakes, yes, they are a risk, but if and when you make the move you can take some precautions to at least minimize some of the danger.

I wouldn't move right now without a job lined up, especially since you have a child. It is tough to find a job many places right now, of course, but CA has it worse than many areas. Combine that with a high cost of living (depending on where you're lving now) and you have a potential disaster moving having a job first.

I lived in Hollywood for about 1 1/2 years, and while I absolutely loved it (and there were some kids in the neighborhood) I wouldn't choose to live there as a single parent with a kid, as it could be isolating. Some of the neighborhoods up in the hills probably have more kids around, but those areas are also very expensive.
