Future of Los Angeles: Are you worried? (hotels, home) - California (CA) - City-Data Forum

What do you think is in store for L.A. in the near future?

I think there are a few worrisome signs, but what effect do you think they will have on the quality of life?

1. Economics. Companies like Hilton Hotels are being drawn out of the metro area to other cities around the country that are friendlier to big businesses and offer tax incentives. This is even happening in the city's bread-and-butter: film production is being drawn to New Mexico and other places where it's cheaper to operate. From what I've learned, the aerospace industry left in the 1990's, what next?

2. Immigration. It's annoying to me that we can't come up with a definitive answer to the question of whether or not illegal immigrants hurt the economy. But from what I understand (I live in L.A. most of the year, but am not a native Angeleno) illegal immigration has wreaked havoc on the public school and health care systems in the L.A. area. What will be done about this in the future? Nothing? What are the consequences of unchecked illegal immigrants pouring into the city?

3. Water and the environment in general. Drought is already causing water shortages in the area, and I believe they have now started rationing it. Again, this seems to be a result of ridiculous overpopulation and sprawl both of which contribute to water shortages and pollution in general.

Do you think the next 50 years look promising for Los Angeles or worrisome? Feel free to discuss other areas of concern I left out.

As for water and economics, we probably could use a new paradigm for both. Some of us will need to get busy and make it happen.

The economic part is serious. The high cost of operating a business in California is going to send more and more companies to other states. In response to Hilton though: That is not really so much due to the economy of California, but due to Hilton's relationship with the Blackstone Group of NYC. Blackstone wanted Hilton to be closer to them and Hilton is moving to an area known for hospitality. Marriott, Host Hotels, Choice, etc... are all already in the area of Virginia they are moving. That area is big in hospitality just like L.A. is big in movies and the Bay Area is big in tech.

I also think NIMBY's prevent much progress for Los Angeles. I think the NBC West Coast flagship's move to Lankershim and the 5 freeway at the Universal Rail station is an example. This is a big benefit for Los Angeles and the type of development that the city needs, however every time anybody tries to build something nice in the city, somebody has a reason to complain and stop it. Do we want one of the largest television studios to give up on L.A. and move to some other state because we are afraid of new buildings???

Environment: This one is an issue too. Sort of sad to think on average, 58% of the water at a home in So Cal goes to the landscaping. I guess everyone wants a green lawn. In many ways, this is nothing but our own fault. While many Californians are aware of water problems, you still have the idiot on the block who waters down his driveway once a week instead of use a broom.
