i think the san gabriel valley has the worst air quality. everytime i was there, i saw smog and had a harder time breathing their than normal. san bernardino is bad too. i dont know if these areas are considered "la" though.

the worst air quality in the region is in the ports and the neighborhoods that are adjacent to the freeways that go in and out of the ports (110 and 710 freeways). as far as water, tap water has to meet strict regulations, so it is fine anywhere as long as there are good pipes in your house. if you mean ocean water pollution, avoid the areas around sewage runoff effluent pipes and you'll be fine.

the parts of LA suffering from the poorest air quality are the areas between the 710 and the 100 freeway. more specifically the areas surrounding the indistrial city of vernon. maywood, boyle heights, south central, huntington park. those areas always smell of something. farmer johns, purex, etc etc.

the area also has a lot of toxic sites. vernon has some of the dirtiest zip codes.

We lived in Long Beach, near the water, and I felt that the air was very, very dirty and polluted. I dusted everyday, and would see a thick layer of black "soot" on the paper towel -ew. I experienced the same thing when I lived in the SF Valley, too, so it is probably the same all over L.A. All I kept saying was "I need fresh air and greenery!"
