I'm a college junior planning for my summer. I want to live in Cali next summer in an extended stay hotel for about 3 months. The hotel is in torrance I was wondering how far is it to hollywood, and is it a bad place? Also is there any other place that i can stay for 3 months where its not a ridiculous price like over 5000 for 3 months.
There are other extended stay hotels that are in:

Gardena
La Miara
Carson
Ontario
What are they like??

Ontario is about 35 miles from Downtown LA in San Bernardino County. I think that I know the hotel you're considering and IIRC it's near the airport. It's not a bad area, but the commute could get tiresome, especially on the dreaded (well, at least by me) 10 freeway. It's inland, so it would be a trek to the beach, though you're closer to the 15 if you plan to head to Las Vegas at all during the trip by car.

There's a Homestead Suites in Brea, which is Orange County, but close to Los Angeles County, off the 57 freeway, which is southeast of Los Angeles. It would be closer, and that hotel generally has some good rates. Brea has a nice downtown area and is a nice community overall. That part of the 57 is well above the Orange Crush, so traffic would not be as bad as further south.

In Irvine, near the Spectrum, there's another Homestead Suites that is another decent property. It's off the 405/5, a bit further south than the South Bay hotels you're considering. The advantage being that it's within an easy drive of the beach, and either Los Angeles or San Diego. Irvine, itself, is a nice city, too, and there are attractions and shopping in the immediate area.

Of the hotels in the South Bay, I would tend to prefer Torrance, then Carson, because they are closer to the beach, and are not terribly far from Los Angeles and Santa Monica. La Mirada can get very hot, but aside from that it's not a bad choice, since you are in easy proximity of the 5 to Los Angeles.

Brea is probably going to be the least expensive, since I can recall rates there around $50-$55/night. Brea, being inland, will tend to be warmer, due to the LA microclimate where the coastal communities can be significantly cooler.

Where is this hotel you in Torrance?
Torrance is generally a very nice area. But there is a part known as Torrrance PO that is not really Torrance at all. It is east of Western and a bad part of town.

I would stay away from those other areas. Southern Cal. gets very hot in the summer time. And Ontario is boring and smoggy inland LA - think all the hot smog rolling in and hanging out. Torrance is located in the South Bay which has a milder climate due to its proximity to the coast.

What do you plan to do while out here?

Derek
