I've been living in West LA for almost 5 years and have quite a few friends in the Valley and I've never heard of this conflict either. Maybe I'm also sheltered.

Majoun, excellent break down. This entire thread has been enlightening. I have the feeling that the "conflict" is probably among a generation much younger than myself... Or maybe a person who grew up in a Southeast LA culture would never even think about such things.... Jeez. I guess if you're a hipster or someone into the music scene, all these little "differences" are important.

My cousins live in the Valley. They've always been there & have quite the happy, yuppie lifestyle. I never knew there could be any discernable difference between one California yuppie family & another... You're either a success in CA or you're not. Ha! I had to leave! I can't compete!

It sounds a little like.... high school mentality... to find all these tiny differences that don't really add up to me... But I guess that's probably what the OP has to deal with in getting her gigs on... *quizzical smile*

yeah i know i'm from London so i know about real diversity, which america lacks with it's segregation. i just don't think the valley is completely dead with culture that's all.

I don't understand the rivalry, but I can easily see why one would hate the Valley.

Like the Mode said...People are People...This crap happens everywhere. Even on a 2x4 mile island. You'd be surprised. Of course, one needs only to turn on the TV at primetime, or to simply scroll back through these listings to tell...we love drama in this country.

I'm new to LA, and haven't stomped in every street out here, but don't really have the need to either. This city is easily fractioned into areas. One thing I've heard about the valley is hot. That's like people referring to all of Florida as "Hurricanes", or "Bugs". I've also heard that it's closer to the mountainous outdoors. That makes me interested. It's great to have the choice of the basin, the valley, or the ocean though. You're spoiled, and you know it! Go to Indiana where your choice is corn-front, or meadow-front. Okay, okay, so we do have lakefront. For a price.

Oh, and this East Coast West Coast thing has got to stop. They both have their charms, but they are two different places, entirely, two different cultures, two different climates. Talk to someone who is from NYC but lives in LA, and they'll go on and on about how much more they LOVE one or the other. But when it's NYC, I simply and nicely ask, why not go back...what do you think they say?

The weather. Same thing that happened down in South Florida...

That would be the Simi Hills to the west and the Santa Susana Mountains to the northwest. As shown here...

There's a rift between the Valley and Hollywood? Really? I grew up in Los Angeles and I never saw that.

There is a rift between the Valley and the city in L.A. in general basically because the Valley is often considered the step-child when it comes to city services and funding. This is why the Valley has often attempted to secede and become its own city.

But I have lived in the Valley and worked downtown and in Century City. Nobody has EVER criticized me or said anything about living in the Valley.

I think it's more about who you are hanging out with.

My advice - get some friends who are adults.

I live in the Bible Belt and I don't think we care what happens in CA. My daughter lives there now and it is different from ATL but all cities are different.
