Hello,

I am French and I am moving to L.A. this coming thursday. I will be living around Sawtelle and Venice bld but my flat is not furnished.

I would like to know where I can buy some cheap furniture in Western LA. I know I can go to Target and Ikea. Is there any place cheaper ?

To start with, I need to buy for my wife and I a bed or mattress, a table with a couple of chairs, a sofa/futon as well as a large closet.

What if I want to buy second hand furniture ? Is there any other website than Craiglist ?

Thanks,

Laurent

if you want contemporary furniture for a reasonable price, there is a place called Images at the intersection of Washington/Via Marina in Marina Del Rey. If they don't have what you're looking for on their showroom floor then they can order just about anything for you from their dozens of catalogs.

If Van Nuys isn't too far for you to go, there's a hotel furniture liquidator:

Hotel Surplus Outlet: Hotel Furniture Liquidators and Resellers

A better selection than hit-or-miss thrift stores. They also don't deliver but refer you to a reliable delivery service. If you're lucky enough to find everything you need (and I think they've got it; it's just a matter of taste), I'd just rent a truck locally for pick-up and return it to a West LA location. Should be less than $100.

my opinion: craigslist and/or thrift shops for anything but a bed. who wants a used mattress? cheap bed: futon. you could get the frame off of craigslist but buy a new mattress for it. you can get sheets at thrift stores too.

Welcome to L.A.

The major thrift shop chains in the L.A. area are the previously mentioned Out of the Closet, Salvation Army and Goodwill. These are most likely to carry furniture. There are many non-chain thrift shops. Many of those are affiliated with Hospitals (Huntington in Pasadena, Children's Hospital in L.A.)

Best of luck.

I drove up to Burbank and furnished my entire apartment from Ikea. The furniture is cheap and they will deliver for free to your area. You have to put everything together yourself, but it's great furniture.

Ikea is great but I saw this sectional that can be turned into sleeper item there for $899 and not having to drive so far, there is this place Easy Life Furniture in West LA on Pico and Olympic that sells the same concept type of item for $499/$599. Def worth checking out...
