I am a fan of Zuma, Santa Monica beach for the Pier. Love the beaches in Ventura County as well. We were at our favorite beach, Hollywood Beach near Oxnard the other day. Had 3 dolphins fishing just 30 feet from us. (Told the kids they were just surfing.)

I don't think there are any beaches that are officially in LA, but for the entire LA metro area, I don't think anything comes close to Laguna Beach.

Manhattan Beach/ Hermosa and Zuma- I personally hit up the beach early before the hordes come. Zuma has a remote feel to it, whereas I find some spots in Manhattan to be a less crowded alternative to El Porto.

I like Will Rogers Beach and the northern part of Santa Monica Beach.

Laguna Beach is absolutely beautiful, among the best in Southern California. But that is Orange County.

And yes there are plenty of beaches that are part of the city of Los Angeles. Venice beach, Cabrillo beach, etc. Then there are the ones that may not technically be within the city of los angeles, but are very strongly associated with LA (IE: Santa Monica, Malibu, etc.)

Heres a good list that I totally agree with.

Eight Great Beaches - LA INC. The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau - discoverLosAngeles.com

With a little tweaking, heres how I add my personal touch for the list:

Santa Monica state beach: Best beach for out of town tourists as it packs in a lot of entertainment
Venice: People watching (although as one pointed out, "freak" show).
Manhattan Beach: Beverly Hills on the beach. People watching (but more specifically the ladies )
Hermosa Beach: Best if you are out of college, 20-somethings
Malibu beach/lagoon: best for surfing/learning to surf.
El Matador: Best beach for an intimate date. Lots of little rocky nooks and crannies.
Leo Carillo beach: best for getting away from the city. You feel far from LA there. Not quite Big Sur, but a little more remote feeling.
Cabrillo beach: Best for educational experience. The Cabrillo aquarium.
