I am moving to LA. I am seriously considering living downtown specifically in the Rowan Lofts...has anyone ever lived down there or know of anyone who has? I've heard it's pretty safe in that area South Spring & main....any thoughts?

There are LOTS of posts regarding downtown lofts, from myself and many others. As I've said, I have a friend at 7th and Spring who loves it, as well as another at the Eastern Columbia and she loves it there as well. I toured the Rowan about a year ago- seems nice, but walk the area. Lots of new bars and restaurants, more activity, but it's still adjacent to the Nickel as you'll see.

My husband and I just moved downtown around Main St., and we love it. How safe you'll perceive it to be depends a lot on who you are and what you're used to. We are long time city-dwellers (from Europe and the East Coast) don't perceive it as being unsafe. The crime statistics published by the LAPD bear us out. (Assuming they're accurate, blah, blah.) There's a security patrol around the neighborhood, and restaurants and bars are open late, making for some evening foot traffic. We didn't look at the Rowan, but we find the area to be nice.

Good luck!

You can find crime reports here:

I've just had my 6th harassment in downtown, averaging about one a year. This time I was just standing in line. I support the growth of this, my, community, but from this point forward I refuse to support any homeless coalition, they only culture a street life of drugs, violence, and corruption.

Today's criminal is about 30 years old, black, roughly 6ft tall. he has a beard that doesn't cover his lip. Dark eyes. He is wearing a black park, black beanie, Black pants and shoes, overweight (a bit), and a dirty white button up sweater. He is frequently texting on his phone. He threatened to hurt and even kill me. I've reported to the police and they are out looking for him.

He is living somewhere around 5th and spring area. Incident happened at the RiteAid on Broadway and 5th. 2nd incident happened on 5th and spring. POlice are looking for him.

^See. Why would anyone pay Santa Monica prices for a living space in the middle of so much crime and depravity? I know the downtown lofts are nice but they really are getting away with robbery

Not all of downtown LA is bad, but you do have to watch where you are.

I don't think that is true....per square foot Santa Monica is MORE expensive than Downtown.

Maybe so but I meant how a nice apartment in a downtown loft is comparable rent price in a similar place in Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Miracle Mile.
