btw, it is a very easy bike commute from MDR to El Segundo. Easier than driving.

If you don't mind that the new condos were built over methane gas, then go ahead.

I love reading comments from all these dolts whining about so-called "jet noise" in PDR (which is non-existent) and, to be fair, they're just trying to keep the hoi polloi OUT of the Playa...

See, after I bought my first sailboat, I lived in Marina del Rey for 6-years before I moved to PDR simply because it was 30% less expensive and QUIETER. No jet noise, no drunk college students having sex in my front yard (the beach) at 3-4 in the morning. Terrific restaurants and basically ZERO traffic compared to the psychotic HALF-HOUR it takes sitting at a standstill just trying to travel a ½-mile from Pacific Ave. to Lincoln Blvd. or beyond on a Fri./Sat./Sun. or holiday when tourists and out of towners descend on the beach so they can walk the Venice pier or Boardwalk...Play del Rey is for locals who own a boat but don't mind driving 5-10 minutes to get to their boat slip at the marina in order to save $1,000 to $1,500/month. And by the way: YES. Phil Jackson does live in Playa del Rey.

I lived near the intersection of Pershing/Manchester for a couple of years, the airport noise is real. It's not constant, but you'll definitely know when a 747 takes off.

Most homes in PDR have multi-paned windows so that's not a problem when one is indoors. Outside, you can clearly hear the planes. Other than planes, PDR is quiet and is one of the lowest density neighborhoods in LA. Easy to get to El Segundo, LAX, 105. For a beach neighborhood, there are very few tourists - there aren't many things to do and only a handful of restaurants in PDR.

MDR is in a more central location right off the 405, which is subject to traffic issues at certain times of the day. Definitely more nightlife and lots of tourists. The recent college grads and those who work in Venice / Santa Monica have good reason to prefer MDR to PDR.

Both areas are benefiting from the rise of Silicon Beach.

I would vote for the Marina. There is a new apartment building on Via Marina at Panay. It's BLUE, you can't miss it. Also some newer buildings on Panay, you can look out at my boat. They have refurbished the apartments on Bora Bora Way. Mariner's Village is cool, they have a few shops in the complex. they used to have a dry cleaner & convenience store, but I haven't been there for a while. Not sure of the rents.
