I need to obtain a ballpark market value for my fathers home in whittier, on or about 1993. I've talked to a few realtors, appraisers and cant find any help.

Do a search on Case Shiller index. Not sure if it goes back to 1993. It only compares big metros like LA DEN, HOU, etc.

Depending on your purpose, maybe you could extrapolate today's house price to the 1993 house price based on the curve the index provides.

county tax records. see what it was assesed at and see the yearly taxes paid. that might give you an idea of what the house was worth. wait that might not work that well given prop 13...

another option: every month the LA times prints a listing of average home prices by zip code. maybe they have that info for whittier 1993.

good luck.

Their numbers come from Dataquick, but they're just median values. LA County Assessors office would have the tax records. Was the property bought/sold in 1993? If so, the company that handled Escrow might have records or the financial institution that held the mortgage. One other very manual method may be to look through Zillow.com and try to find houses in Whittier, that were sold in 1993. That would be listed if the property has not been sold since.
