The best thing about Southern California in my opinion is the wonderful weather. You can do outdoor stuff pretty much year round. Also you never have to shovel snow if you live in house like you would have to if you lived in NYC. (I am sure you know about that being originally from the Bronx.)
My mother rents a studio apt. in L.A. for under $1000 a month near La Brea/Wilshire Blvds. She loves living near the museums. Her apt. is next to a supermarket & a drug store & good public transportation (which is not common in L.A.)

I just left LA sadly but I will say I enjoyed my 8 years there. There is so much to do and the weather is the best. I had no problem with 70 degrees and sunshine.

You should be able to find a place for the money you want but what you're gonna have to do is some serious leg work to find a "decent spot." I lived near Western and Century for the whole 8 years. No major problems, off the street parking, one bedroom apartment. When I left the rent was $850.00 but I know of nice spots round about there for $800.00.

When I moved in the first owner, a lady, was wonderful. Any problems-fixed immediately. Anything changes or issues you needed to aware of-she sent notes aorund ahead of time. It was just heaven. Then she sold the place. And this guy.... I won't go into detail on how much of a let down he proved to be but, ugh!

So, like I say, try your best to do some extra research and leg work on a spot when you see one. Drive through late one night, if you can, to see what its like. Try to inconspicuously check things out. Check the Craigslist posting too and get a feel for the rates in certain areas.

You should be able to find within the area of the 405, 10, 110, and 105 freeway bounderies, something for the money you want but don't limit your search to only there. Have fun!!
