I just moved to Michigan last year. Although I love it here, I do miss....
The mountains....
The ocean...tons of lakes here, but not the same...walking on the beach...
Old Town Temecula, and driving throught the wine country...
San Diego...specifically downtown, Old Town, Hillcrest, and Fashion Valley Mall
Oceanside, Ghetto by the Sea!
KCal 9 rules!
Larry H Parker, fighting for me...
Cal Worthington, and his dog spot...
Knott's Berry Farm...
Old Town Pasadena...
Santa Barbara...all of it
Laguna Beach and Newport Beach...
Peace out!

But most of all, I miss Los Angeles neighborhoods like this one: For only $330K (really, this is not a joke) you get to live in a gated community. This model even comes with window coverings.

Charles,

The gated community image was perfect (the others as well, but that one is an iconic ad for California housing)!

My mom (from a very rural state) visited a few weeks ago and everytime she would say something like,

"Oh what a darling community with nice little homes. Now what is wrong with this community?" (I was complaining that we could not afford to move a block over and off our busy street in Brentwood. She was pointing out 'nice little homes' in the most expensive area in Santa Monica along San Vicente.

"Mom," I said. "Those nice little homes cost $2.5 million and the big ones upwards of $7 million."

"You're kidding?!" she said. I never heard another peep out of her when I complained about finding a place to move.

Default Northern CA versus Boise ID

I lived in Northern CA almost my entire life and looked at the east coast (mainly focusing on Upstate SC) before making my decision to move to Idaho. I heard all the typical comments before I left - "You'll never be able to move back (financially)!", "You'll hate the weather (too cold in ID or humid in SC)!", "It's all white supremists or Ku Klux Klan!", etc.

Well, I absolutely love it here and I continue to appreciate it more as each season goes by ! I love the slightly cooler weather, less people and congestion, safer environment, and more family oriented. Where I live, there are 3 great parks for walking my dogs and 800 acres of BLM land for hiking and cycling/biking. What I dislike here is the lack of good employers and pay and the fact that I no longer have my social network to find decent jobs in my field .

What I miss most about CA is my family and friends !!! There is also a lack of places to shop . For instance, in the Sacramento area when you wanted to go the mall, there were 4 large malls all within driving distance and that is not including the numerous strip malls throughout the area. I didn't shop at Traders Joes, but I hear that CA people constantly complain that we don't have one here (a complaint in other states also - LOL ).

I don't hate CA or bash it, but I don't want to move back there either . Financially I made out like a bandit in my move, so if I wanted to, I could move back. But there is no way I could buy or rent anything as nice as what I have now and no amount of money will guarantee me the great neighbors I've got now either. Now if I could just become a "Cyber Beggar" !

You may want to try some gimmick like Nora the Cat--LOL--You know the video that has been going around with the cat that plays the piano! She now has a sequel with an intermission and is selling mugs, shirts etc on her website!

http://video.msn.com/v/us/v.htm?g=0D...s&fg=&GT1=9951

That stuff cracks me up, because it is so obscure, but you know it is going to make the owner some money. Heck I may get a coffee mug atleast.

I hear you about the shopping! This is something that really has struck me the most in my search to move away from California. It just is not there or it is half as convenient (exceptions Seattle, Scottsdale).

I must admit one of the things I actually enjoy about many Californians is the ego! I know, it is the thing to hate the most--the rudeness, the attitude, even the hate. But at the same time along with the negatives it is an expectation of more somehow, of believing one's own delusions, which is in a way choosing to dream (hopefully though not at the expense of hurting others.). It allows one to define and redefine their reality, which can be freeing and nurture expansion of self and growth beyond the constraits of a community, sometimes being the first step in making dreams come true. Other places I have lived have always, without exception of city size, been very conformist and overly people pleasing type places, which I find limiting. (This conformity has also come in the form of conformity of being non-conformist in some places I have lived other then CA! The people pleasing perversely in some other places is accomplished by being withdrawn and cool, but that is how people please one another in some of these more limiting places, besides the usual people pleasing.)

I think it best of course when this big California ego has a sense of humor and can see itself and have a good laugh at its largeness.

By the way I spend a lot of time in Boise, have some family there and love it. I love the outdoor activities in summer-winter. I just am such a California lady now, I can't bear leaving the balmy nights and days for long any more. The lemon and palm trees . . . the sweet smell of orange blossoms . . . fountains and pools glowing at night year round. But places like Boise, Sun Valley etc they are the best places for my soul to revive (okay besides Hawaii .

Default The really funny thing about Boise is

longtime Idahoans are 'rarely' found on any website like CD or CL . They'd prefer not to tell anyone else how nice it really is here . Mostly it's the transplants like me from CA or "Realtors" who say 'nice' things about Idaho .

Hey fairweathergolfer, next time you're in Boise visiting, I think you ought to bring some pics of CA and take me out to lunch !!! Your choice since you'll be treating - LOL!

p.s.
I love Hawaii also. That was actually my first choice for relo from CA !

I can't believe I forgot this...I miss Ocean Beach down in San Diego.
And yes, I miss family and friends! I now live in the Detroit suburbs. I love the current area I live in, but a previous poster was right about the Cali ego thing...I kinda miss that too.
