Sherman Oaks to Simi is quite a schlepp too. Any chance you might want to live closer to work than S.O.? If you are single, Warner Center is a good location and still close to S.O. and Simi with plenty to do and walkable. If you are set on S.O. then I would stay as close to Ventura Blvd or South of it and look on Craigslist for apt listings. Rents have come way down.

I think it's fair to say that all of Sherman Oaks is a SAFE and DESIRABLE area. That said, living immediately north or south of Ventura Blvd is ideal so you can walk to the Blvd and have easy access to shops, stores, and services.

Dickens street runs parallel to Ventura Blvd (just a block south). It has a lot of apartments/condos for rent. Take a look on CraigsList and drive the area. There are also a few large apartment complexes just south and north of the corner of Sepulveda & Ventura Blvd. Have no idea what rents are.... Good luck.

Sherman Oaks is generally very good. Depending on your budget if you can buy south of Ventura Blvd that can be a bit better than north, but hey here are many good pockets.
I used to live in Linda Vista section of Pasadena and worked in Burbank; loved my 17 min commute. But all the way to Simi would have been something else entirey.
Budget will also determine if you get a house or a condo. All are pretty much on sale. But with the number of buyers out there now if it is a good price and sparkles it goes quickly.
Oops I see you are renting, same things apply.

Thanks to all of you....
Eventually, I want to buy a place, but I need to know the neighborhood first...that's why I'm thinking about moving to Sherman Oaks and rent for a while....
I like to buy a new condo, but all are way too expensive still
my budget is around $400k....and I prefer two bedrooms....

thanks again

Sherman Oaks 1 br rentals, as of today, go from $1050 to 1650.
Hope that helps!

Sherman Oaks to Simi Valley is a little closer in distance that Pasadena to Simi Valley, drive time will be better but it won't be a huge time saver. Most of Sherman Oaks is very nice and safe. Just be careful if a property is north of the 101 Freeway. Some apartments might say they are in Sherman Oaks but they could really be in Van Nuys. I'm thinking of areas along Van Nuys Boulevard up towards Magnolia. As long as you stay south of the freeway and closer to Ventura Boulevard you are fine.

from sherman oaks to simi you would have a reverse commute. depending on how close to freeways your apartment/office are, the drive could be as little as 20 minutes (with no traffic) to 45 minutes or so or even longer with nasty congestion.

The northern boundary of Sherman Oaks is Burbank Blvd. (though that's soon going to be extended to Oxnard St.), so Magnolia is well within Sherman Oaks. I recommend that you stay away from the block of apartments on Buffalo Ave. south of Magnolia, very close to Woodman Ave. Lots of Section 8 around there, unfortunately.
