I'm looking for a single-family home to rent and with the criteria I need (accepts pets, has refrigerator, 2+ bdrm, over 1,000 sq ft, close to Los Angeles AFB) a particular house in Torrance best fits our needs. Unfortunately, I'm still in Ohio and can't look at the house in person until we move out there at the end of June.

This house just seems so perfect for us and I don't want it to slip out of our hands. Like I said, it's in Torrance, just west of the 405 near the Galleria at South Bay. Without giving away the specific address...it's on West 177th Street and the nearest major intersection I see on the map is Hawthorne Blvd at Artesia Blvd.

I've just heard that there are "good" and "bad" parts of Torrance and I want to make sure this is a desirable area before I commit to renting it.

Any advice would be appreciated!

It's fine. An older middle-class neighborhood of small homes on small lots. It's an extremely convenient location. You might want to call the Torrance Police dept. to see what the actual crime stats are for that area, but my guess is that it's fine. Torrance has very low crime - way under the national average.

I lived a few blocks from that street back in the late 90s - it is an alright neighborhood. Most of Torrance is tolerable, I would just recommend avoiding anything that is listed as "Torrance P.O." (Post Office) as this is actually more often than not Harbor Gateway, and rampant with gang activity.

Not sure if school district is a concern for you, but here is a link to Torrance USD's school boundary maps just in case (you can also check out the SARCs for each school while you're at it).

The Galleria is, as you know, right across from that location, but there are also many other shops around that area, and actually there's even a Cold Stone Creamery there too - I wish I was closer to one!

I hope you get the rental, although I will recommend that you to act fast because if it is reasonably priced, then the landlord is probably going to have lots of applications that you're going to have to compete with, and I am guessing that they are going to have a preference for people who are local and can meet with him vs. someone on the other side of the country.
