My husband and I are planning to move down to SoCal to attend the Gnomon School which is at 1015 North Cahuenga Blvd in Hollywood.

We have a car, and are currently in the Bay area so no stranger to traffic. If possible I'd like to draw on your experience and get some pointers about decent neighborhoods. Ideally an apartment (1/1 or 2/1) around $1-1.5k with a decent commute time for what would be afternoon or evening classes (1pm or 7pm start times).

Any suggestions?

Los Feliz in a nice neighborhood, but it's on fire right now.

The best opion would be Westside Rentals (http://www.westsiderentals.com/), they charge about $60.00 for 60 days of access. Craiglistla is also another fair source- free.
Another good source linked to the MLS can be found at http://guests.themls.com/.

Lots of opportunities in Los Angeles, stand clear of anyone that charges a fee to find an apartment, Most Real Estate Agents do not charge until yo have found a place and signed the contract.
