That's tough, but let's also remember that when you ask and get good advice... you should listen to it.

Here's the original thread.
Numerous people in the thread -- including me -- pointed out that this was an obviously bad situation, and that you should run away. While you admit now that you were naive, other not-so-naive people tried to help out. And throughout the thread, you make excuses for the guy who was acting shady from the get-go, and you occasionally bristle at people who point out the obviously questionable stuff.

There are sketchy people in every city, including Chicago. But there are also good people, and let's remember that a number of good Angelenos here warned you -- and you kind of even warned yourself -- and you ignored all of this and took the place anyway. Your current situation, while unpleasant, was highly predictable.

Well, I'm sorry to hear things didn't go the way you expected, tho I've been through lots of the same sort of nonsense in OC when I was young i.e. flaky roommates, landlords, having to struggle to make bills or rent. You're right about that 'special' sense of humor, some get it, many don't.

No matter the locale, this economy (or lack thereof) is pretty awful, as stated previously on the other posts. I've been in the workplace since 1976 and I don't recall anything this bad. If its bad HERE, its really bad everywhere else. I wish you all the best and I hope we can ride this slump out sooner than later.

Jer3784's original thread about the apartment and that crazy old guy is one of the funniest things I've ever read on here. How could he not know this guy was nuts?

Also, some old guy living in an apartment in Buttcrack Hollywood should be a red flag that said old man knows absolutely nothing about The Business and/or has been a huge failure in it.

This roomate and apartment situation could have happened to you in ANY city, not just L.A. You know the rule - if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. That goes for anywhere in this world. You have to be smart and skeptical. Good luck in breaking into the music industry and it's good to hear that you aren't giving up. I moved to L.A. several years ago DETERMINED to work at a movie studio, and after a year of nothing but interviews, temping positions and networking....it happened. Stay determined and don't blame L.A. for having bad apartment luck -stay smart and trust very few.

Wow - good story -- a prefect example of how absence makes the heart grow fonder - I hope you find your dream home/life soon!
